Summer School

BoY Summer School 2012

The period from May 1st through August 31st will be one big summer camp workshop!  It will be modeled after our successful retreat format and a regular university-type curriculum, with a vast choice of classes and both core courses and electives.

Curriculum

Skills classes: Centered on learning a specific skill or technique, these classes typically will not include yarn for a specific project but could have some preparation required before class.  They will generally be 1 – 2 hours and their "credits" will be equal to the number of hours required in class.

Project classes: Typically 2 – 4 hours of instruction at a cost of $10 per hour plus the cost of the materials, these will be smaller projects, and may focus on specialty techniques or just be so popular that we had to have a class!  The material costs for these classes will range from $5 - $100 and credit hours will be listed with each class and will be based on the number of instruction hours.

Major project classes: Normally a minimum of 4 total hours of teaching time and will either be a sweater, afghan, or some type of on-going project like a "block of the week" that may take a bit longer than your typical project.  The material cost for these classes will typically range from $100 - $200.  Credit hours will be listed with each class and will vary based upon the difficulty and length of time required to complete the project, but will be no less than 5 credit hours.

Electives: Additional credit hours will be given for every item listed below and anything else we can dream up to do for fun over the summer!  Note that electives only count toward your total hours if you have completed the core curriculum.

Monthly Knit-A-Longs

Monthly Crochet-A-Longs

Completing any project from a project or major project class will double your credit hours for that class!

Yarn tastings (we will try to have at least one per month)

Stitch & Pitch (date to be announced)

Patty's Pajama Parties (format to be announced, but it will be fun!)

Participation in a charity knitting project over the summer, either one of ours or one that you choose.

Patty's Yarn Bomb Squad - Yes, we are going to find some bike racks and poles to bomb in the neighborhood and I will be freely giving extra credit points to my co-conspirators.

Mini Retreat Weekends

We are planning to schedule two weekends, one each in June and August, where we will set up a retreat format with one to two major project classes, 3 – 4 project classes and 6 – 8 skills classes.  This way, if you want to try to get it all in as fast as possible, you can spend up to 6 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday in class!  We'll also have other fun activities planned for breaks and lunches.  These will all be held locally, here at the shop and adjacent space.  They may or may not include a "celebrity" instructor, depending on scheduling.

Required Courses and other qualifying items

Core curriculum: The first step toward "graduation" includes accumulation of 25 credit hours during the period of May 1 – August 31. These hours may only consist of Skills classes, Project classes and Major project classes.

Graduation: Everyone who completes the core curriculum of 25 credit hours is eligible for "graduation" and will be invited to our graduation party in September and earn a "Summer School 2012" patch for their Baskets of Yarn Bag (will be available for purchase).

Graduate level with Honors: Everyone who completes the core curriculum of 25 credit hours PLUS accumulates an additional 25 credit hours (total of 50 credit hours) will be eligible for "graduation with honors" and will be invited to our graduation party in September, earn their "Summer School 2012" patch PLUS a Baskets of Yarn Bag.

Summa Cum Laude: We will honor one individual who completes the core curriculum, and accumulates the most additional credit hours in excess of 50.  This will be our top honor and will include a special Summa Cum Laude patch and a "prize pack" worth $100 or more.

Magna Cum Laude: We will honor one individual who completes the core curriculum, and accumulates the second highest additional credit hours in excess of 50.  This individual will receive a special Magna Cum Laude patch and a "prize pack" worth $50 or more.

Cum Laude: We will honor anyone who completes the core curriculum and accumulates credit hours in excess of 50 with a special Cum Laude patch and a store credit of $25.

Graduation Party

We will have a big graduation party in September where we will award patches, jackets and special honors.  We will have a "fashion" show to show off all our completed projects.  In addition to the special prizes for Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude, everyone who is eligible to attend will be entered into the drawings for door prizes that we will solicit from our vendors.

Cost

The cost to sign up for summer school is just $100, which includes a $10 one-time processing fee and a $90 refundable fee that you can apply toward the last class (or two) that you plan to take in August.  If for any reason you are not able to use the $90 for its intended purpose in August, you may convert it to store credit at the end of August. This just helps us to pre-plan our teaching schedule a bit, work around instructor vacations and customize our classes to be the classes you really want to participate in.

Everyone who is signed up for summer school and has paid their $100 deposit will be eligible for special mailings and invitations during this time period.  You will be added to the platinum customer mailing list for the entire period.  You will receive priority placement in all classes and we will fill classes with Summer School participants first.

When you sign up, we will ask you to pick the classes that you would be most interested in taking from our list of proposed classes.  We will use these choices to project which classes to offer and will send you an email when the class is scheduled so that you can sign up first.  We will offer popular classes in more than one time slot.
